I have submitted many articles on a variety of topics related to anxiety, stress and depression in this blog,  talked about how these mental health problems have personally impacted my life, but quite honestly I have never really delved into the symptoms of depression.   I recently came across a great article that can help you self diagnose if you yourself are experiencing symptoms of depression or perhaps someone close to you.

5 Symptoms of Depression

Depression is a serious illness that many times people overlook. They tend to tell someone who is suffering to snap out of it. However, unless you really understand the symptoms of depression and how hopeless the sufferer can feel you can’t help them. This is why it is important for everyone to understand and learn to recognize the symptoms so they can help a loved one who has this painful problem.

Lack of Energy – This is probably one of the most prominent symptoms of depression. Even when someone is mildly depressed they feel lethargic and don’t want to do anything. Sometimes simple chores seem to be too difficult to accomplish. Other times a simple act like making the bed seems like a triumph. The drained feeling that depressed people have is very real. They can’t just perk up and get something done. They truly are exhausted.

Sleep Disorders – Going along with the previous symptom, people who are depressed often have problems with their sleep patterns. They either sleep too much or can’t sleep at all. They will wake frequently during the night or have difficulty falling asleep. There is no set pattern for sleep issues in people with depression, but there are definite disruptions in sleep.

Loss of Interest – Many times, sufferers lose interest in the very things that have brought them joy. Hobbies and interests fall by the way side and don’t appeal to them anymore. Perhaps they just don’t have the energy to participate, or they don’t feel that they are capable.  Loss of interest in hobbies can be a result of other symptoms of depression.

Overwhelming Hopelessness – While this isn’t always a symptom that others can see, we can sometimes detect it when the sufferer talks to us. It seems they have given up on life and themselves. They have feelings of worthlessness and have no hope for the future. When they talk, there is a strong negative current in their conversations as though everything is wrong with the world.

Eating Disorders – Like sleep, eating patterns can be disrupted by depression.  The sufferer may binge eat or they may quit eating all together. They may start to crave salty or sweet foods since they are typically comfort foods.  If you notice a sudden weight gain or loss, your loved one may be suffering from depression.

So now that you know the symptoms of depression how can you help? You need to help your loved one realize that they need to go to the doctor. Now this will not be easy because they usually cannot see the symptoms in themselves. In fact, many depressed people think everyone else has something wrong with them.

Show your friend love and understanding. Be there for them to talk to when they need it. Once you build a strong trust, you can encourage them to seek medical help.  Sometimes just having a shoulder to cry on and someone you can rely on can help someone who has a mild case of depression. Just be there and be a friend. That is the most important thing you can do.

Managing Stress In The New Job

Let’s face it.  We have all landed that new job, were extremely excited and then something happens.   You start the new job, and maybe everything is what you thought it was going to be.  Unexpected things come your way and your not quite sure how to deal with it, or you don’t know if you can solve the problems that are coming your way and what happens?  You begin to get anxious, depressed and stressed out.   You think thoughts like, “This is nothing like I thought it is going to be, or I can’t do this, or I’ll never be able to figure this out?.”  Does any of this sound familiar.

A new job can be overwhelming and stifling.   I remember back in the late 80’s I started a job and experienced these exact same feelings and I didn’t do anything to manage the stress.  I didn’t nip it in the bud so to speak.  I kept showing up for work, and the anxiety, stress and eventually depression got worse to the point I had to be treated for depression.   It was all fear that I created in my own mind, because this job, turned out to be the best job I ever had in my life.  A job that I thoroughly enjoyed after I go myself together.

Don’t let this happen to you.  If you are starting a new job, sure you will be nervous, and a bit anxious, but realize you were chosen because they found something special about you.  Realize you will make some mistakes along the way, because this is part of the learning process.   It is not a reflection on you.   Think positive thoughts about this job and look into the future and visual yourself performing at a high level with a smile on your face, because you thoroughly enjoy this job.

Positive thinking can help alleviate anxiety, but there are still other things you can do.   I discovered a great program on the internet a few month’s ago that so many people are having a great deal of success with in dealing with stress, anxiety, depression and particularly panic attacks.  The program is called Panic Away.  The success of this program has been so remarkable that I decided to feature it on my blog awhile back.  I sincerely believe in this program and want to share it with everyone that is or has dealt with the horrors of anxiety.

Signs of Teenage Depression

Depression is a growing mental illness that is constantly affecting humans around the world. It is a disorder that effectively damages person capacity to view or lead life with positive frame of mind. It distorts the personality by changing their mindset and the way they feel and react to things.

Though Depression is not limited to any age group or gender, it observed that many young teenagers are suffering from extreme emotional and physical conditions. It is therefore important for parents to understand what is depression? What are sign to look for to identify whether your son or girl is suffering from it.

Usually parents ignore signs such as lack of concentration in their children or unstable diet or sleep disorder, as normal temporary trends that may leave in short time.

Unfortunately, they do not fade away, but rather become stronger than before, causing more suffering to the child. Let me provide you some of the early warning symptoms of depression in young people. These are as follows:

Physical Characteristics: Check out whether your child is suffering from feelings of low self-esteem, lack of confidence or gets frustrated and irritated easily.

Other signs to look for are:

1. He/she is constantly worried.

2. There is lack of energy in them. They feel tiredness and suffer from insomnia.

3. Loss of appetite. In some cases teenagers gain abnormal weight, while in other situations they lose considerable weight.

4. No motivation or inspiration to achieve laid out goals.

5. One of the most telling sign is to see if your child has unexpectedly given up any hobby or activity which he/she used to enjoy a lot previously.

6. Does your child suffer from frequent and unexplained pains like stomachache or headache?

All of the above are common symptoms of depression in most teenagers.

Social Behavior: Another Commonly spotted symptom in teens is that they withdraw from relationships and friends. Teenagers might try to avoid going to college due to others making fun or because they do not have good friends. They don’t like social gatherings and prefer to spend most of their time alone.

Performance: Teens suffering from depression may have difficulty in concentrating on any kind of work. They become lazy and procrastinate. This can be a strong indication that they are going through stressful situations at their school or college.

As teenagers are not fully grown up, they need the help and guidance of elders. The parents have to take up this responsibility of supporting their children, encouraging them to fight off these feelings and not give up easily.

Nervous breakdown occurs when a person is suffering from severe stress for a very long time. There is a sudden change in the behavioural pattern of the person. A person with nervous breakdown is unable to perform his normal duties as done by him earlier.

Some other individuals might experience uncontrollable need to cry, loss of energy, withdrawal, confusion, inability to think clearly, sleep disruption or insomnia and a loss of pleasure in day to day activities, a feeling of worthlessness and depression.

These symptoms are termed as the depressive disorders.

Effects of Stress, Anxiety and depression on mental health

Whatever is the reason of the breakdown; all the breakdowns have in common- the inability to function as normal. The person suffering from nervous breakdown is actually suffering from some sort of mental disorder. Stress, depression and anxiety are all responsible and are related to the mental disorders.

The increase of stress, depression, anxiety levels leads to nervous breakdown. The symptoms of stress, depression and anxiety are lack of energy, exhaustion, trembling hands, disturbed sleeping patterns, excessive worries, irritability, isolation, panic, worthless feelings, guilt, headache, muscle pain, increased heartbeat, loss of sex drive and loss of appetite.

Lack of energy is one of the most common symptoms of stress, depression and anxiety. Even after trying hard to get energized a person cannot achieve that. All finally results in lesser energetic feeling and accounts to lesser motivation level. In a person suffering from stress, depression is mentally exhaustive and hence he is unable to perform his day to day activities normally. No matter even if he takes rest for long hours, he feels exhausted all the time. The trembling symptom is also one of the features of stress and anxiety.
Effects of the stressful situations

When a person is in a stressful situation the body flows with the powerful chemicals such as the adrenaline. There is a change in the sleeping pattern when the person will tend to sleep too much or sleep only for few hours. Once the stress level decreases then the nightmares will disappear. Excessive worry is another symptom of anxiety, stress even for smallest events in life. The person feels negative about every situation.

The sufferers often feel like being alone as they feel awkward around others and rather are alone to avoid this feeling. Loss of appetite is one of the most common features. Reducing food intake further affects energy levels and deprives the body of nourishment, further aggravates stress, depression and anxiety. All these stressful experiences tend to make a person mentally weak and thus, this leads to mental breakdown.

Staying Cool In Summer Heat To Avoid Depression

With summer fast approaching and temperatures beginning to soar I wanted to put out a word of caution on the importance of staying cool in the summer to manage depression.  The summer heat can wear you down and if you battle depression it can have a very bad affect on you, especially if you are taking medications.

Here are some summer tips to help you prepare for the upcoming summer-

*Wear light colored clothing and a hat to keep the sun off your face.

*Stay Hydrated and drink plenty of fluids.  If your traveling be sure to keep a small cooler filled with beverages.

*Avoid alcoholic beverages.  These can dehydrate you fast.

*Avoid spending long periods of time in the sun.   Find a shade tree, relax and read a good book.

*Avoid Caffeine products and energy drinks.
